Symbols & Markers

In the book Symbols Signs and Signets, Ervine Metzl writes: “Behind the veil of Time, primitive man has left a record of himself in symbols he created ages before he learned to write. Just as a child piles up sticks and stones to represent concepts for which he has not yet learned words, so mankind in its childhood built cairns and marked trees in its first efforts of self-expression.”

My fascination with archetypal symbols goes back to my youth. I think an artist’s job is to make meaningful marks. Man has been making marks since the beginning to tell his story. I use certain symbols to activate space. Sometimes in an abstract way, I will use the triangle, the delta, to symbolize the village or the family. In many of the works, the piece symbolizes a document.
